Aluminium Sign Tray vs ACM Panel: Which Should You Use?

Aluminium trays and aluminium-composite panels can look similar in a drawing, but they behave differently at the edges, around fixings and over a long exterior installation.

When comparing an aluminium sign tray vs ACM panel, consider edge detail, finish, durability and budget.

Choose an aluminium tray when the sign needs concealed returns, a fabricated appearance, durable paint finishes or integrated lettering and illumination. Choose an ACM panel when a flat, economical sign face is appropriate.

ACM means aluminium composite material: thin aluminium skins bonded to a core. It is light, stable and useful for printed panels, site information and many non-illuminated fascia applications.

A folded aluminium tray is fabricated from sheet metal with returned edges. It creates depth, hides many fixings and offers a robust base for cut letters, graphics or illumination.

The commercial decision

A commercial comparison of aluminium sign trays and ACM panels, covering appearance, structure, fixings, graphics, illumination and exterior use.

Compare appearance, structure and maintenance

An ACM panel is naturally flat. Its edges can be finished neatly, but it remains a panel. It is efficient for wall signs, directional signs and large printed faces where depth is not part of the design.

An aluminium tray has folded returns, giving the sign a more architectural profile. It can conceal rails and fixings and provides a controlled surface for powder coating or wet painting.

Neither option is automatically better. Wind exposure, panel size, fixing centres and wall condition determine the required support. Large ACM faces may need framing, while a tray needs sufficient depth and reinforcement.

Graphics can be applied to both. Trays suit flat-cut or built-up letters and can integrate illumination when access, heat and cable routes are designed in.

For long-term exterior work, ask about thickness, coating, edge treatment, fixings and warranty. A good specification explains manufacture and installation, not only the face design.

Choose by project requirement

Flat information panels

ACM is efficient for printed graphics, directories, safety information and straightforward wall signs.

Premium fascia signs

A folded aluminium tray gives depth, concealed fixings and a controlled architectural finish.

Applied lettering

Both can carry lettering, but trays often produce a cleaner, more substantial assembly.

Exposed locations

Panel size, wind load and support design matter more than the material name alone.

Common questions

No. ACM has aluminium skins around a core, while a tray is normally fabricated from solid aluminium sheet.

Yes, when the grade, thickness, support and fixings suit the size and exposure.

Yes. Trays can support illuminated letters, fret-cut details or internal lighting when designed correctly.

Both can perform well. Longevity depends on grade, coating, fabrication, exposure and maintenance.
