Planning consent for signs

Advertisement consent and listed building applications prepared and submitted on your behalf, checked at survey stage before you commit to a specification. See our guide for more detail.

The commonest reason a signage project runs late

Most businesses discover the consent requirement after the sign has been designed and sometimes after it has been made. Advertisement consent typically takes eight weeks in Hertfordshire, and a listed building adds a second application on its own timescale.

Established early, it is a manageable step that runs in parallel with manufacture. Established late, it is the reason a shop opens with a blank fascia.

What usually needs consent

Illuminated signage almost always. Projecting signs that oversail a public footway almost always. Freestanding totems almost always. Non illuminated fascias usually fall under deemed consent, but not in a conservation area and not on a listed building. We check the designation at survey rather than assuming.

What we need to quote

  • The property address
  • Photographs of the elevation
  • What you have in mind, illuminated or not
  • Your target opening or completion date
Signage designer's desk with scaled building elevation drawings and a photograph of a British shopfront, metal sign material samples, ruler and pencil, hands reviewing proposed fascia dimensions, daylight.

What we prepare

Designation check

Conservation area, listing and any local scheme of management such as Letchworth.

Application drawings

Elevations, sections and a site location plan to the authority requirements.

Advertisement consent

Prepared and submitted to the relevant district council.

Listed building consent

Prepared alongside where the building is listed.

Programme

Manufacture scheduled to run in parallel so consent is not the only critical path.

Common questions

Which signs need advertisement consent?

Illuminated signage almost always, projecting signs that oversail a public footway almost always, and freestanding totems almost always. Non illuminated fascias usually fall under deemed consent, except in a conservation area or on a listed building.

How long does advertisement consent take?

Typically around eight weeks in Hertfordshire. A listed building adds a second application on its own timescale, which is why we run consent and manufacture in parallel.

Do you submit the application for me?

Yes. We check the designation at survey, prepare the elevations, sections and site location plan to the authority requirements, and submit on your behalf.

Not sure if you need consent?

Send the address and a photograph of the elevation. We will check the designation and tell you before you commit.
