Case study

Multi-brand exterior directory sign

A freestanding directory that brings three business identities into one clear arrival point.

Work type

Exterior directory signage

Setting

Multi-occupancy commercial premises

Practical goal

Identify each business before visitors reach the building

Three identities, one coherent sign

The photograph shows a tall freestanding directory positioned outside the building and visible from the approach. Three businesses share one structure, while each identity keeps its own logo, colour and breathing room.

The sign has to work at two levels. From a distance, it needs to read as the place to look for business identification. Closer up, each panel must be easy to scan without one brand overwhelming the others.

What makes the finished work effective

  • Separate horizontal fields keep three visual identities distinct.
  • The elevated format remains visible above the perimeter railing.
  • Generous margins prevent detailed logos and smaller wording from crowding each other.
  • The restrained white structure sits comfortably against the commercial building.

Planning a similar project

For a shared directory, the survey establishes sightlines, ground conditions, fixing positions and the order in which visitors encounter the tenants. We also need to know how frequently occupiers change, because that determines whether individual panels should be replaceable.

Artwork should be supplied in vector format where possible. We can then standardise scale and spacing without redrawing the character out of each brand.

Questions this project answers

Can individual business panels be replaced later?

Yes. A directory can be specified with separately replaceable faces or panels. That needs to be decided before manufacture so the structure and fixing method allow for future changes.

How is the correct sign size decided?

Viewing distance, approach speed, the number of tenants, logo complexity and nearby obstructions all matter. A site survey is the reliable way to balance visibility with the scale of the building.
